Protection Panel FAQs

What is the NIJ Certification & Independent Testing?

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is a division of the Department of Justice that has been setting voluntary body armor standards since 1972. Its testing standards are the baseline for body armor performance expectations in the U.S. Our rating of NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA on our protection panels means that we offer the highest level available for handgun protection. In order to test this, the NIJ fires .357 Sig FMJ 125-grain bullets at 1,470 fps and .44 Magnum SJHP 240-grain bullets at 1,430 fps at our product to determine the bullets do not fatally penetrate the panel.

As a reputable manufacturer, we also ensure that our products go through independent lab testing to corroborate the positive findings of the NIJ testing.

What are the warranty and return policies?

We warrant our soft armor ballistics for 5 years, offering a replacement for any defects. Please note that improper cleaning and exposure to high temperatures voids the warranty.

Due to the sensitive nature of these panels, we cannot accept returns and would never resell a pre-owned item. If you have any questions prior to purchase, please contact us at info@phalanxsystems.com or 354.727.4884.

Do I qualify for free shipping?

Many companies will charge for shipping, but we want to do our best to ensure that this ends up in your hands – protecting your family – without adding an additional expense to your decision. We offer free shipping in the contiguous United States. You can order to Alaska and Hawaii for a small shipping fee.

Important Note: We cannot sell internationally or ship to Connecticut. If you end up placing an order to an area to which we are unable to legally ship, we will cancel the order and send you a notification.

Is it legal for my child to have a protection panel?

It is legal in all 50 states to own protection panels [body armor] and your students can legally bring these into their schools. Body armor is only illegal for a felon of a violent crime to own.

Can we take the protection panels on a trip?

Protection panels [body armor] are legal in all 50 states. Additionally, these are TSA approved to bring on planes either in carry-on or checked luggage.

I'd like one for my work bag or purse, do these come in other sizes?

We offer 11 sizes and shapes of protection panels to suit any bag you might have. If you are interested in another size, please email us at info@phalanxsystems.com with the dimensions of your bag, and we will provide you with the specs and a link to purchase an option that best matches your criteria.

How should I speak to my child about the right way to use the panel?

This can be a very personal and delicate conversation, but we wanted to offer you a few key points of conversation. If your child has been in school for a few years, he or she may have already gone through several active shooter drills and be familiar with the threats that protection panels are used to protect them from.

  1. Please instruct your child not to let others know they have a protection panel in their backpack. You do not want someone taking it from them when the time matters.
  2. It is key to understand that the protection panel can only work if it is being used every day. Ask them not to remove it unless absolutely necessary.
  3. Your student should do his or her best to keep their bag near them should a threatening situation arise. However, it is more import to run for cover or safety that to retrieve the bag if it is not next to them.
  4. The bag can be worn on your child’s back as normal if fleeing or seeking cover. Practice with them to keep their head down and arms folded in front to protect their vital organs.
  5. The bag can be used as a shield either when moving for cover or already in a hiding spot. Your child should make themselves as small of a target as possible and keep the bag with the protection panel between them and the threat.

How will I know if these are the right size?

In terms of protection panels, bigger is better. Bigger panels means that you will get the most coverage against threat inside the backpack. Our protection panels are some of the largest that are still designed to fit into your child’s backpack. We offer two sizes to cover all standard mini backpacks for young children and full-size backpacks for teens and adults. Please check the specs before ordering and measure the inside of your child’s bag. Should you have any questions on fit, please contact prior to placing an order at info@phalanxsystems.com or 352.727.4884.

My child spilled something on the panels, are they ok?

We know accidents happen, so our protection panels have a rugged, waterproof outer layer. The ballistic layers are also sewn together to prevent separation and maintain the protective fiber strength of the panel should they get damp. However, we do suggest doing your best to soak up extra liquid as soon as is feasible so the panel is not sitting in liquid for an extended period of time.

Important Note: Please do not use a detergent, spray, wipe or cleaner of any kind if you are trying to clean your panel. This will damage the material and void the warranty. We recommend a moistened rag to clean as needed and then allowing to fully air dry.

If I use more than one, will the panels stop rifles?

These protection panels are rated for handgun calibers only. Stacking them together is not a tested, certified or recommended to stop rifle ammunition. We can provide hard armor plates that can be used in the backpack to stop rifles, but any armor that will stop the power of rifle calibers will be thicker or heavier and make it a much less comfortable day-to-day experience for your child.

How do I insert the panel?

Inserting the panels is as simple as ensuring the proper side is facing the body. The panels are labeled to let you know which side is the WEAR FACE, which should be placed closest to the body.

Some bags have multiple pockets or cavities, and if yours has that, we suggest moving the panel to the one that is the closest to the body. If you don’t have a pocket that you would use to secure the panel, it can simply slip into the back of the bag. It is semi-rigid and will not be apt to slip or bunch once it is in place.
